Dr McQuillan is a Cardiologist with sub-speciality training in Echocardiography. He has extensive experience in Clinical Research. He has a longstanding interest and expertise in the care of patients with heart failure, valvular heart disease, coronary artery disease, lipid disorders, hypertension and atrial fibrillation.
Career Summary: Dr McQuillan is currently Dean of the UWA Medical School (2017 – current). He previously served as the Head of School for Internal Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of Western Australia (2013 – 2016). He remains active in clinical research, HDR supervision and teaching for the MD course at UWA. He is a Cardiologist and Director of Echocardiography in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH; 2004 – current). Following completion of his PhD in vascular biology at the Heart Research Institute of WA, he undertook Postdoctoral research at Harvard University and completed a Fellowship in Echocardiography at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA. He was the Director of Clinical Training at SCGH for six years. He has been the primary supervisor for ten advanced trainees in Cardiology and continues to be actively involved in the supervision and training of basic trainees in internal medicine for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). He has been nominated for teaching awards at UWA and SCGH.
Profile and Peer Recognition: He has been awarded Research Fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP, 2003) and University of WA (1996). He was awarded the prize for the best advanced trainee research presentation (WA branch of RACP, 1996) and was a finalist for the Advanced Trainee Research Award at the RACP Annual Conference and Ralph Reader prize at the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ) Annual Scientific Meeting in 1996. His status as an emerging leader in his field is evidenced by invitations to speak at national scientific meetings. He was Convenor and Chair of the organising committee for the CSANZ Annual Scientific Meeting in 2017. He served for six years on the CSANZ Quality Standards Committee and is now on the CSANZ Scientific Advisory Committee. He is a member of the Medical Deans of Australia and New Zealand Executive committee, the Clinical Council of the Australian Atherosclerosis Society, and the Rural Clinical School of WA Executive committee. He chairs the Graduate Entry Medical Programs Application and Selection Service (GEMPASS) Executive committee.
